What can you get with Microsoft SharePoint 2010?

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is effective platform for business and collaboration. This platform was already appreciated by many customers. Using this platform users get a big variety of abilities.

Well, let`s imagine you`ve already installed of configured your service. What can you do here? SharePoint 2010 provides a lot of features for building your site, setting up necessary rules, creating necessary content and downloading documents.

So you can create your own site for sharing information and storing document. Or you can create Team site for communication, sharing calendars and managing schedules. This entire staff makes team work easier and increases effectiveness. Intranet sites – those ones you may use for keeping companies information and news, accessing to business process information finding necessary data and peoples easily. Finally, public website – is convenient tool for small business marketing on Web. Using familiar tools you can update business information and choose your own domain name.

What about SharePoint communities you may use them for work in small or big groups of users, to combine users in the community, depending on their competencies and create wikis and blogs. Creating content with rich media data and categorized pages is also available. SharePoint communities enable you to upload images and format content using Ribbon UI.

If you have special business needs – it is not a problem. You can upload sandbox solutions or create own custom workflows using Microsoft SharePoint Designer.
Except this SharePoint Composites enables you to publish and edit Access data bases with internet browsers and create Forms using InfoPath 2010.

As for site content - Microsoft Office integration allows you to access view and edit documents with internet browser. You can reach your business data at any time from any place only using internet. Storing document sets, exporting multiple files and tagging info are also available for you.

Open and use a Web Part Maintenance Page

If you encounter problems with a Web Part or Web Part connection on your Web Part Page, you can use the Web Part Maintenance Page to help isolate and fix your problem. You must have the appropriate Web Part, Web Part Page, or Web Part zone permission to use the Web Part Maintenance Page.

Tip If you are not sure which Web Part or Web Part connection is causing a problem on your Web Part Page, it is a good idea to work in a step-by-step fashion by closing one Web Part at a time and then browsing through the Web Part Page (click Go Back to My Web Part Page) to see if that fixes the problem. After you identify the problem Web Part, you can consider resetting or deleting it.

Open the document library that contains the Web Part Page.

Point to the name of the Web Part Page, click the arrow that appears, and then click Edit Properties.

Click Open Web Part Page in maintenance view to display the Web Part Maintenance Page.

Verify that you are in the view that you want, either a personal view or shared view. If you need to switch views, do one of the following:
If you are in a personal view and you want to switch to a shared view, click Switch to shared view.
If you are in a shared view and you want to switch to a personal view, click Switch to personal view.

Select one or more Web Parts, and then do one of the following:
To move a Web Part to the Web Part Page gallery, click Close.
To remove personal property values and revert to the shared property values of the Web Part, click Reset. You are prompted for confirmation before resetting a Web Part.
To permanently delete a Web Part from the Web Part Page, click Delete. You are prompted for confirmation before deleting a Web Part.
It is possible to have permission to delete a Web Part in a shared view but not in a personal view.

When you finish, click Go Back to Web Part Page.

Enterprise Features Exposed

There are three different Enterprise features that can be enabled within a farm. IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that by enabling any one of these features requires that users have an enterprise client access license (ECAL). An argument has been made whether or not users are actually "using" the enterprise feature. Unofficially, for an "audit", an ACL list controlled area where enterprise features are enabled is a good practice. Control who can/cannot access your site or web application using permissions. Also see: Web Application Policies to deny users who only have a Standard-CAL.For mixed environments (standard and enterprise in same farm)...another issue that has come up is around governance. This is one area where the solution cannot be 100% MUST implement a process into your environment to control who will have access.In summary, there are 4 major "features" that require enterprise functionality Excel Services, InfoPath Forms Server, Business Data (BDC), and BI tools/web parts. With the first three, it is easy. Excel Services, IPFS, and BDC all require administrative (Central Admin) configuration in order for users to utilize these features in their sites. With BI tools: List templates and web parts are provisioned down to the Site Collection/Web level. So, at an admin level, it may be more difficult to report on enterprise feature "usage" at the site level. IMPORTANT: The process of deactivating the Enterprise Site features "feature" will remove web parts from the web part gallery, but it will NOT remove a list that is provisioned on the site (e.g. KPI List).

Master Pages in SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2010 supports master pages to support consistent look and feel. SharePoint provides a special document library namely Master Page Gallery for storing master pages. SharePoint foundation has 3 out of box master page namely:

Amoung all the master pages v4.master is the most popular master page. It has elements like Site Actions menu, the breadcrumb trail, the Ribbon, the Welcome menu, the Site Icon, the TopNav bar, the Quick Launch etc. v4.master is the default master page in SharePoint 2010.

If you open the master page, then you will able to see it contains some standard html element like html, head, body, and form, and includes many server-side controls. But one more major concept it, is contents 34 ContentPlaceHolder like PlaceHolderPageTitle, PlaceHolderAdditionalPageHead, PlaceHolderMain etc.

Default.master is a master page designed to support a feature known as visual upgrade, which assists companies that are upgrading SharePoint 2007 sites to run within SharePoint 2010 farms. This is beneficial whenever a company is migrating from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010. He does not want his users immediately switch to new SharePoint user interface, in fact users can continue to work with the older SharePoint 2007 user interface during a transition period. After sometime then a site collection administrator can change from default.master to v4.master.

All these master pages are in ghosted, but you can open a site using SharePoint Designer 2010 and modify it. But after that it becomes unghosted and stored in the content database. But we have to remember one thing that these pages can not contain inline code.

Besides using all these out of box master pages, you can also create your custom master page using SharePoint 2010 designer or using Visual Studio 2010.
