Issue: The document could not be opened for editing.  A Microsoft SharePoint foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document

Configuration: Win7 with SP Office Suite 2010.

Troubleshooting:                                 

-       Checked the all other documents are opening fine except excel.

-       Checked add on in the IE settings and all are enabled. 

-       Repaired the office installation.

-       Checked office components all are installed.

Resolution:

Open the Site in IE (32-bit) and it should open the documents

Note: There are several know issue with IE (64-bit)
